Version 1.4, August 2007
1. Get the key out of lock box (after taking this training, volunteering a few nights,
and passing a basic test, you will be given the combination).
2. Open both doors.
3. Turn on dome and stairway lights.
4. Check recent log entries for any problems.
5. Get eyepiece box out from lower cabinet at base of stairs.
6. Open dome shutter (don’t let handle go past the top -– there is an
auto-cutoff switch, but don’t rely on it).
7. Remove dust sheet covering scope.
8. Remove black telescope cover.
9. Remove finder covers and eyepiece plug.
10. Turn auxiliary fans on (especially in hot weather, tilt scope up
about 45 degrees and direct small fan at mirror).
11. Plug in drive (white plug into outlet).
12. Put in eyepiece (plus Paracor, for long focal length eyepieces –
16mm and higher).
13. Turn on telrads.
14. You may need to turn off the dome exhaust fan to steady the image (from
circuit breaker box, the double switch, lower right side).
Closing up:
At a minimum: close the shutters and lock the doors! Follow the posted
shutdown checklist! If you opened it, close it. If you unlocked it,
lock it. If you turned it on, turn it off. If you plugged it in, unplug it.
If you took it out, put it back. Take out the trash. Fill in the log book.
If something goes wrong, ask for help! Check with BMs or long-time FBAC
members. If you are by yourself, there is a list of experienced people
you can call for help (list is located on the east-side wall near the
first-aid kit).
