4-July-2000 image of Comet Tempel 1

Back to main Deep Impact/Tempel 1 page.

In the early morning hours of July 4, 2000, FBAC members Cynthia Gustava, Keith Rivich, and Bill Dillon took their first images of the comet.

The four-minute image below was taken with Rice University's ST-9 CCD camera (on generous loan to us this summer) on our club's 18 inch (46 cm) reflector at 09:32:56 UT (image mid-point). The comet is marked with vertical and horizonal bars above and to the left of the comet. Its faint tail can be seen extending to the lower right.
